Would you boycott Apple?
Dear CNET members,
Take a look at the physical computer monitor you are using to read this newsletter, or take a look at the keyboard, mouse, or computer you have, maybe even the chair you're sitting on. Chances are they were manufactured overseas, possibly in a Chinese manufacturing plant with poor working conditions where workers are subjected to cramped working conditions, brutally long work hours, and many times have faced work-related hazards and injuries. If you knew that these work conditions were in fact the case, would you boycott those manufacturers? If this were an Apple product, would you boycott Apple?
In a recent CNET Crave blog, titled "Friday Poll: Would you boycott Apple?", CNET Blog Network author Amanda Kooser talks about the recently reported article in The New York Times on injuries and poor working conditions at Chinese manufacturing plant Foxconn Technology, which makes products for Apple. And because of the article, a petition has been launched demanding an "ethical iPhone 5," and even calls for a boycott of Apple products. Some consumers are even saying that they will reconsider their brand loyalty with Apple.
Now just remember that Apple is not the only one here who uses Foxconn Technology to manufacture their products; other big companies like Dell and Sony do, too. Read up on the Kooser's blog and be honest and tell us where you stand on this subject. Would you boycott Apple or any other company who uses these manufacturing companies? Let's hear it.
Cheers!
-Lee
