Help, my Windows 7 System restore has disappeared!

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! After watching CNET coverage of CES 2013, let me ask you this: Was there anything in tech that got you excited and that you're looking forward to in 2013? If there is, tell us about it right here in the CNET Member Giveaway comment section. If you do, you'll get a chance to win a Fitbit Flex, which won the CNET Best of CES award! CNET is giving away not one, but five of them, so submit your comment now. (Sorry, international folks -- this is open to U.S. residents only. Please see the rules here for details.)

Now let's touch on Gary's question, which deals with his Windows 7 System Restore suddenly disappearing from the Windows Start Menu.

Gary, hopefully this is something that is can be easily solved. As member wpgwpg pointed out, you may have inadvertently dragged your System Restore icon somewhere else. And if that's the case, your program hasn't been deleted or gone any where - it's just a matter finding another method of getting to that program. And once you find your Windows System Restore program again, all you have to do is create another shortcut and add to which ever place in Windows you'd prefer.

In other responses to your question, a few members described how they go about getting to their System Restore, so do check them out. Now if the missing Windows System restore program icon missing isn't the case --and it is completely missing in your OS, then I think you may have greater problem on your hands and we'll have to revisit this issue. But first, see if it's just the icon missing and System Restore is actually still around. And when you get a chance please let us know how these solutions work out and post your results in the discussion. Good luck, Gary! Thanks everyone for your contributions. Have a great weekend!

Q: Help, my Windows 7 System restore has disappeared!
I hope someone can help me. I have Windows 7 HP 64bit and System Restore has suddenly disappeared from the Windows Start Menu. I usually go to the Windows Start Orb, Accessories, and it's listed under System Tools. Don't know when or why it disappeared. I heard that this was quite common, but no luck in finding a solution. Can you guide me on how to get it back? Also any explanation as to why this may have happened, so that in the future I can prevent it from happening again. Thank you.

Next week's question
Q: Should I consider upgrading to Windows 7 or 8, since XP is on its way out?
I have three machines running Windows XP with very few problems, but I see that Microsoft will soon stop supporting this operating system in 2014. I know it is a probably a bit early to ask since we just started the new year, but I wanted your thoughts on this. Do you think I should start considering the move to upgrading my systems to Windows 7 or 8 for safety and security reasons? Or to remember the old adage "if it isn't broke, don't fix it." What would you do? Thanks.
