CNET Community Hot Topics weekly newsletter
February 8, 2005
Dear CNET members,
Today with the onslaught of spyware wreaking havoc on the computing world, I personally rank spyware as equally offensive, if not worse than viruses. And there's something to be said about these destructive nuisances when a big player such as Microsoft joins the retaliation with its recent release of an antispyware app. How will it prevail against the seasoned veterans in this field? Look no further, as we throw the new kid on the block Microsoft Antispyware in the ring with the popular Spybot Search & Destroy for a head-on match. Who will determine the winner? Nobody, but you, your vote, and your voice. So check out this match and see what others are saying. If you have your worthy 2 cents to share, drop it in; the bucket is wide open. And if Microsoft just isn't your cup of tea, no worries--join us in our poll and tell us right here what antispyware app(s) keeps your computer safe and sound.

Cheers!

Antispyware vs. Spybot
In the latest "Sunday smackdown," we pitted Microsoft's Antispyware (beta) against Spybot Search & Destroy. How does Microsoft's rookie app compare against a seasoned spyware tool such as Spybot? You had plenty to say about both utilities.

Microsoft wins again
Even though it's still in beta, a surprising number of you have deemed Microsoft Antispyware as the current king of spyware killers. Why the landslide? CNET member Kid A points out several good reasons in his post.

A close second
CNET member erikg gives Microsoft Antispyware the blue ribbon for best all-around spyware removal tool. But when it comes to deep system scans, he chooses Ad-Aware over AntiSpyware and Spybot Search & Destroy.
