E-mail account compromised. How do I stop the spammers?

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! This week's question comes from Robert who thinks his e-mail account has been compromised and the perpetrator is sending out spam e-mails in his good name! As if receiving e-mail spam isn't annoying enough, now people are receiving it from you. That's got to be disturbing. The good news is that you aren't alone, as many members said that they, too, had experienced the same thing.

After going through our members' advice and suggestions, I found numerous ways this could happen. A common one is e-mail spoofing, when the spammer has changed the "From" line to display your e-mail address to make it look as if it's coming from you, but it's not. Another is when a spammer hijacks your e-mail account and uses it to send out e-mails. Your computer also could be infected by malicious software and it uses your own e-mail client to send out e-mails. And one of the worst is if someone else's system has been infected and sends out spam e-mail in your name. These scenarios are probably the most common cases, but there are others.

So there is good news and bad news. The good news is the things that are within your control can be resolved--malicious software cleaning, changing passwords, and so on. However, the bad news is the ones that are beyond your control may be difficult to resolve, or there may simply be nothing you can do.

If you read through our members' answers, you'll get a good idea of all the possibilities of how this happened. Most importantly, pay special attention to the members who offer advice on how to prevent this from happening in the future. Hint: change your password frequently and make it a strong one! I have a few selected member answers to get you going in the Q&A section, but please check out all the advice and recommendations. Thanks for participating! Be safe and have a splendid weekend!

Cheers!
-Lee

   TOPIC OF THE WEEK
Q: E-mail account compromised. How do I stop the spammers?
First of all, I want to thank you and all the forum members for the great suggestions over the past few years.

I do, however, have a problem that I don't recall being discussed. Several weeks ago my e-mail account was hacked. My address book was compromised. I and several of my contacts began receiving e-mail, presumably from me, with links to inappropriate content. I became aware of this at first by receiving "returned e-mail" notices to addresses that don't exist any more, for example my daughter's e-mail at a university she has graduated from. Shortly thereafter, I began receiving e-mail from current contacts, asking why I would send them such content. I have never responded to the phishing... Read more

  NEXT WEEK'S QUESTION
Q: How can I determine the market value of my older electronics?
Over the years, I have purchased many new televisions, DVD players, projectors, laptops, iPods, and cell phones. After buying the newest version of an electronic, I am left with the dilemma of what to do with the old, outdated product. I have thought about trying to sell my used electronics on eBay, Craigslist, or some other online e-commerce Web site. My question is how can I determine the market value for used electronic equipment? Is there a resource like Kelley Blue Book for used electronics? If you have experience with this, please share with me. Thanks in advance.
