Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage
my passwords

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday the 13th! I took a week off of writing this newsletter, and my goodness everyone, I can't believe how many members came through for William on his question about managing passwords! This just goes to show how much love goes around when folks are in need.

After an hour, and a couple of bottles of eye drops, I read through all 468 posts, and I have a feeling many of you at one point or another found yourself in William's shoes. We received a plethora of member recommendations. From what I gathered, from the dozens of recommended password manager utilities, Roboform was mentioned most. Also, a couple of runner-ups for utility recommendations were Keepass and LastPass. However, it didn't stop at that, as there were many recommendations for using software you may already have, such as Microsoft Word or Excel. Some members suggested creating a document that contains your passwords and password protecting that file, and even some recommended using FireFox password manager that is built right into the browser. Overall, everyone shared their methodology and it's great to read about your solutions.

When you go through all the answers this week, granted that there are redundancies, pay attention to all those folks who explained in detail how they strategically create and remember their passwords. With all the security compromises in the news these days, no one can be too safe. Also, it's always great to learn new ways to create safer passwords that are easier to remember--I know I picked up a few great tips from you all and I appreciate them. I didn't pick out any selected answers this week, because I think everyone's answer deserves a read. Thanks everyone for your continued support to help one another and we all appreciate your contributions! Take care everyone and have a great weekend!

Cheers!
- Lee

Last week's question
Help! I'm at my wits end trying to manage my passwords
QuestionI hope you all can answer my questions, as I am sick and tired of all the passwords I have to remember for all my online accounts from my department stores to financial sites. What bugs me most about creating passwords is that every darn site has their own requirements for passwords! Some are case sensitive, some require numbers and letters, some a combination of both, and some even restrict the amount of characters I can use! The list of requirements goes on and I'm tired of it. I'm not getting any younger and it doesn't help that my memory is really starting to let me down. Some of you are saying why don't you just write it down? I've done that, but because I live with a few people, I try to keep it in a safe place. However, I've learned that eventually I will forget where I stashed it. I'm sure I'm not the only who has this dilemma, so how does everyone keep up with all these passwords? What do you do? I believe there are password managers for computers, but are they safe and trustworthy? What if someone else use my computer, will they be compromised? What are my options? Please help me out; I'm at my wits' end trying to manage my passwords. Thank you!

Check out next week's question:
Extending the life of my laptop's battery
Next week's questionHello, I have a HP laptop that about 1.5-years-old and its battery is in such a pathetic state. When I pull the plug on it the laptop, it completely dies off (shuts down). It's as if my laptop is on a respirator (the battery) and it can't breathe on its own. Since it was getting highly frustrating that my original battery would not hold any charge whatsoever, I resolved to get a 12-cell lithium ion battery. Now, I am more concerned about how I can use my battery more efficiently. What should I do to preserve the condition of my new battery so it can work longer? It is expensive to replace a battery every year. Please let me know what all I can do to extend the life of my battery. Should I be plugged in all time while I'm using my laptop or should I charge and discharge it? I will greatly appreciate your recommendations. Thank you!
