For an elderly person, is the tablet a good move from a desktop/laptop?

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! This year my dad will be turning 82, and I've considered getting him a tablet as a supplement to his desktop computer. At his age, and with his busy social schedule, I figure he would enjoy the convenience of a tablet and not being tied down to a cord or desk. He would primarily use it for Internet browsing, checking e-mail, dabbling with games, and watching movies, probably much like member Kevin's father would be doing. The only two concerns I had for him are his sight and his ability to grasp the touch-screen concept. Though he already passed the touch-screen test when I let him use my iPhone.

Kevin is in a similar position with a decision of whether to get a tablet for his 92-year-young father, but the biggest concern for Kevin is his father's ability to use the tablet and how simple it would be for him to adapt to it. Well, Kevin, as your fellow member, jaflady put it, "it totally depends on the person's abilities, not age." And I would have to agree -- age shouldn't matter. If a person is able to grasp the whole touch-screen concept and figure out how to type with a touch-screen keyboard, they would easily get used to it. It may just take a bit longer to get accustomed to it. As many members suggested, take your father to the store and have him give a tablet a whirl and see how he does, and go from there. Kevin, you are very fortunate as there were more than 50 responses to your topic from your fellow members and many people of all ages chimed in to tell their experience and suggestions, from what to expect to the pros and cons. I enjoyed reading them all and I'm sure you will, too, in order to make a sound decision for your father. Good luck Kevin!

Maybe you're in Kevin's shoes or you're even thinking about a tablet for yourself, and you're curious as to what to expect as far as using a tablet. Well, this one's for you. Happy reading and enjoy. Have a great weekend everyone, and thank you for all that you've shared with us.

Cheers!
-Lee

   TOPIC OF THE WEEK
Q: For an elderly person, is the tablet a good move from a desktop/laptop?
Hi! My dad is 92 and is having increasing trouble using a PC. I would like to migrate him to an iPad/tablet setup. He only needs the Internet, and I was thinking this would be easier for him than a computer because it's mobile and even lighter than a laptop. My questions is in regard to ease of use. Do you think this is the right direction I should be moving him in? Anyone know about tablet use for the elderly (other than learning the OS)? Moving from a PC, are tablets simple enough to use, even for my dad to adapt to? Any information that you can provide as to ease of use would be appreciated. Thanks!

  NEXT WEEK'S QUESTION
Q: How can I make my Windows 7 machines boot up quickly?
I have read many articles on how to make your computer boot quickly. I have tried several, but after a month or so they become very slow again. I have four laptops and three PCs in my home. While they are from different manufacturers, they are all no more then a year old and running Windows 7 Home Premium. With my Internet service I have Norton installed. My newest computer can take up to 2 full minutes, while one of the laptops can be as quick as 45-50 seconds. Can you tell me specifically what is the magic formula or method of how I can get all my systems to boot up quickly and continue to do so in future? Thank you.
