CNET Community Hot Topics weekly newsletter
May 23, 2006
Dear CNET members,
I'm not a heavy cell phone user, but I own a phone that has most of today's technology, like a built-in digital camera, Web-surfing capability, and so forth--and I love it! The convenience, the availability, and the flexibility of these things make my life grander. However, as many great conveniences and features as today's cell phone technology offers, I'm sure many of you have an equal amount of gripes about them. So without further delay, this week's featured discussion is all about what you hate about cell phones. This topic isn't limited to cell phone technology itself but also services, hardware, and even the people who use them. So saddle up and get ready to unleash your dislikes. But before you do, read what other members have already said in the latest Make the Call discussion area, then tell us the things that make you cringe about cell phones. We're all listening to you on the other end!

Cheers!

Cell phone pet peeves
From obnoxious ring tones to outrageous bills, the benefits of a cell phone are occasionally outdone by its bogusness. What do you hate about cell phones? Several of you offered your two cents.

Just keep it simple
CNET member hogger03 thinks most cell phone manufacturers have their priorities out of whack. He'd happily give up every extra trinket if he could get a phone that simply offered solid sound quality and no dropped calls.

One conversation at a time
As an employee at a fast food restaurant, CNET member e.arnold can't stand people who order at the drive-through and talk on their cell phone at the same time. Often, he says, they get their order wrong because they're not paying attention.

Confusing interface
CNET member designgrrl is still waiting for a phone that doesn't require a million clicks just to get to certain features. She hopes that Apple will get into the game and create a great cell
phone interface.

Speak Up!
It's been said that cell phones are both the most valued and the most loathed gadget. So even if you adore them completely, what do you hate about cell phones?

Digital cameras: submersible or
   just weather-resistant?

Camera manufacturers are offering ultracompact models that can handle 5 or even 10 feet of water. Do you really want to bring a snapshot camera underwater, or do you just want
weather resistance?
Do we need a national ID card?
The United Kingdom is calling for mandatory national ID cards by 2010. Meanwhile in the United States, data warehouses such as ChoicePoint know more about you and me than cops know about convicted felons on the street. Something's wrong with this picture. Will national ID cards make the United States and the United Kingdom safer?
The large-file problem
There are two ways to send big files to friends: using a central server or via a point-to-point connection. Editor Rafe Needleman explains which method is right for today. How do you deal with the large-file problem?

CNET member goonta says:
"Now that I have one, I am so disappointed I could just cry--not because it wasn't what I expected, but because it IS what I expected and more, but with the exception of a major flaw that utterly ruins what could have and should have been a masterpiece!" (read more)
