How do I make and restore backups from Windows 7?

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! I hope this newsletter finds everyone well. This week's topic was from Angie, who needs some suggestions on how she can easily and effectively back up her Windows 7 system and personal data. If things on her system started to go south, she wanted to know how to easily restore her system and be back on her merry way again.

Well, Angie, you asked and our members delivered. As with any backup and restore plan, there are multiple methods to the madness. Some are fairly easily to do, and some are maybe more on the technical side, depending on your technical abilities. Some methods use third-party utilities, and others are built right into your Windows 7 operating system. As member ajtrek pointed out, however, your question was threefold, so he broke it down to the specifics, offering some of recommended methods. I hope that after you read ajtrek's recommendations and all the other advice provided by our members, you'll soon have a good idea how to get this show on the road.

If any of you have any more recommendations, please don't be shy and join the conversation. But as Angie stated in her post, if you can, please keep the tech jargon down to a minimum. Thank you everyone for your contributions. Enjoy your weekend!

Cheers!
-Lee

   TOPIC OF THE WEEK
Q: How do I make and restore backups from Windows 7?
How do I make and restore backups from Windows 7? I believe they are done with images that I do not know about. I tried and when I wanted to restore some part of it, I was told that you cannot restore only a part of it, rather you have to restore the full previous image. Now, wouldn't this overwrite all my newer information?

I am a pensioner, so these technologies are getting a bit beyond me. But what I would like to do is back up an image of Windows 7 and my content, restore when I need to when things go wrong, and be on my way. Is there such a thing? I need something that is user-friendly and effective -- whether it is paid or not. Do you have any suggestions as to what to use? If you can, I ask that you please keep the tech jargon to a minimum as it may go over my head. I would really appreciate some help here. Thank you.

  NEXT WEEK'S QUESTION
Q: Scam alert. Are you getting phone calls by people claiming to be tech support?
Hi my name is Glenn, screen name Glenn51. I have a question for you and it might make a good post on your CNET community page. I also read most all of your post and sometimes comment to help answer problems.

I've been receiving phone calls to my home phone over the better part of two months on the average of two sometimes three times per week regarding my Windows operating system. They claim to be from tech support. The first time I "almost fell for it" but as the session went on it got... Read more
