Dear CNET members, An iPod is one of those things that even if you aren't a music lover or an MP3 player enthusiast, you can't help but hear, see, or read about it. Since its debut in late 2001, with almost four years of buzz and popularity under the iPod's belt, it has gained a massive following. You have iPod lovers, haters, and everyone in between. Considering all the publicity, I'm curious as to where the iPod-vs.-the-others debates will rank in history. So what do you think of the iPod--do you think it is overrated? What makes the iPod so great: brilliance of marketing or brilliance of technology or none of the above? Do you think the iPod will thrive for the next four years, or will it sink to become just another fad? Many community members have already left their two cents in our Make Some Noise forum; now it's your turn to bring on the heat and tell us if you think the iPod is the real deal or just hype.

Pomp and packaging CNET member yamza says that the iPod is all hype, thanks to the player's slick packaging and hip marketing. He goes on to recommend players from iRiver and Cowon that trump the iPod in features and functionality. Read yamza's full post Well worth the hype Though the iPod might not be the most technically advanced, CNET member hatandglasses13 praises it and iTunes for setting a high industry standard for MP3 players as well as online music retail. Read hatandglasses13's full post Just overexposed Though he's opted to go with a different MP3 player, CNET member fatdogmojo doesn't think the iPod is overrated, just overexposed. The player's overwhelming popularity causes it to take on more scrutiny than other players. Read fatdogmojo's full post Speak Up! Is the iPod is worth its hype?
