Would you use your real name online?

Dear CNET members,

Many of you probably use an anonymous username/alias to posts comments and user reviews, and participate in other community-related activities online. And because most people use pseudo aliases online, many people are a bit more daring and carefree, or even post stuff that is just downright nasty because they feel they are anonymous. Now, do you think those misbehaving anonymous folks would change if they were to use their real names? Some people believe that if people used their real names to post their online content, it would make their submissions seem more genuine or creditable, and they probably would be less likely to spew junk out of their mouths.

In a recent post by CNET blogger Dara Kerr, titled "YouTube gently prods users to go by their real names," Dana reports that YouTube is attempting to clean up its image and curb nasty commenters on its site by encouraging people to use their real names and link to their Google+ profile because YouTube is just riddled with nasty comments. But the big question is, will this tactic work? Will those nasty commenters willingly give up their anonymity or will only the people who are already "good citizens" be the ones signing up to do it? Now setting aside YouTube users for a moment -- if you were offered a chance to change your current anonymous username to your real name regardless of what site you participate in -- whether your behavior is good or bad online -- honestly, would you do it? Why or why not? Speak up in the comments and tell us what you think.

Cheers!
-Lee
