Help! I need a new digital camera. What are these new hybrid-looking ones?

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! If you are like Samantha, who has been out of the loop on digital cameras for quite sometime and is looking for a new digital camera to replace her old compact point-and-shoot, then this discussion topic may be for you.

After years of using her good point-and-shoot camera, Samantha recently went shopping for a new one and low and behold, she realized that after many years of not paying attention, a new breed of cameras is around. These cameras don't exactly fall in the compact camera class nor do they fall into the more fancy dSLR cameras, but are like a "hybrid" camera, being somewhat compact yet having an interchangeable lens (here are some examples).

Well Samantha, never fear, our community members are here. This week a bunch of members, and even CNET Senior Editor Lori Grunin, came by to contribute their knowledge on all the latest digital camera technologies. Not only are these "hybrid" cameras explained, including their pros and cons, but the discussion features tips and lessons on digital camera sensors and helps to answer what makes one camera better specification than another. I learned a few things myself.

So to start, I have a few listed member responses in the Q&A section below, but please read through all our members' advice. I'm sure that by the time Samantha gets through this discussion, she'll have a much better idea of what camera will fit her needs and an updated lesson on all the new camera breeds out there. The discussion is open, so come on in and join us. If you have any other tips or buying advice or more insight on cameras, please share! Thank you all for your invaluable knowledge! Have a great weekend.

Cheers!
-Lee

   TOPIC OF THE WEEK
Q: Help! I need a new digital camera. What are these new hybrid-looking ones?
I hope you can help me out. My well-served Sony compact digital camera of over six years just crapped out on me and I found out that it's not worth fixing (the cost of fixing was more than I paid when I bought it new!) I figure after all these years of use, it's time to look for a new one. I recently window-shopped at my local Target department store and I was surprised to see a lot more variety of cameras these days, whereas six years ago I remember having two choices -- it was either a compact camera or one those big fancy ones with big lenses that were interchangeable.   NEXT WEEK'S QUESTION
Q: How can I secure my external hard drive?
What I'd like to do is secure my external hard drive from prying eyes and if it's lost while I'm traveling, no one will be able to access the data on it. I've tried several security programs, but none of them seems to work. My requirements are straightforward: it needs to be securely password-protected and the data on the drive must be accessible using any PC computer whether it is mine or another person's, regardless of which Windows OS. Does anyone know of such a program that works, is secure and reliable, and won't break the bank? I don't need all the bells and whistles, just a secure external drive to protect my data. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
