What's causing my CD/DVD burner to suddenly stopped working?
Happy Friday! I hope this newsletter finds everyone well! I've been absent for a couple of weeks, but I'm back in the saddle. You may have noticed our new commenting platform if you read my community newsletter from Tuesday or read member comments on the new Apple iPad Mini. The platform is completely new and I personally think it's pretty darn slick, with features such as comments dynamically appearing and notifications via e-mail if someone replied to or liked your comment. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, please go to any CNET product review page and look over the new comments section. We currently have the new commenting platform on CNET product review pages, but eventually we will roll it out to all CNET article and blog pages. I hope you enjoy it, as we've worked our butts off to bring you this new commenting system!

Now let's hit up this week's topic and see if we can help Ronnie with his mysterious CD/DVD burner that suddenly stopped working. Well, Ronnie, this issue can stem from a few possibilities, from software conflicting with newly installed software and not properly closing a burning session to simply a hardware issue -- in which the hardware is acting up erratically and you just need to replace it. Luckily, DVD burners aren't too costly to replace.

I have selected a few featured members' posts in the Q&A section that I think will give you a good starting point to narrow down your issue. But please read through all member suggestions for additional ideas. My suggestion is that before you dig to deep to start with some simple tasks, such as trying different discs, blowing out some dust bunnies from your drive, and thinking back to when your burner stopped working correctly. Did you recently install something new that might have caused a conflict? If all member suggestions fail, maybe the simplest solution would be to replace the old drive. Good luck, Ronnie, and thanks to all who have contributed. Have a great weekend!

Q: What's causing my CD/DVD burner to suddenly stopped working?
I was copying my music and videos onto DVDs and CDs until a couple of weeks ago when it suddenly stopped working for me. For some reason now when I try to burn music, my programs show that it is burning and finishing off, then when I check the disk there is only 1KB on each song, and I have wasted quite a few discs. For DVDs, it won't even start to try setting up to copy. I'm wondering if my DVD/CD burner has simply gone bad or another program has caused it to malfunction? I'm running Windows 7, my processor is 2.6GH, 6GB RAM, and a 600GB hard drive. Any information or clues as to why this is happening would be welcomed.

Next week's question
Q: Laptop: Sudden battery failure or something more?
Dear friends, I have a HP Pavilion DV3 notebook running on Windows 7. It was purchased in December 2009. The battery has been slowly weakening but before it would last at least an hour. About a fortnight back, suddenly the battery has failed to power even for a minute. If the power plug is pulled out, the computer switches off, and does not even provide time to shut down properly. In my experience, battery failure occurs gradually, and not so suddenly. I don't mind replacing the battery. But, I do not know if there is any other problem besides the battery in this notebook. Could there be any other problem besides a weak battery? I would be grateful for any input on this issue, before I proceed to change the battery. In addition to this, if I do get a new battery for my notebook, can you please advise me on some of the best practices of keeping my new battery healthy? These batteries are expensive and I'd like to get the best performance out of it and maximize its life span. Thank you!
