CNET Community Hot Topics weekly newsletter
October 31, 2006
Dear CNET members,
Happy Halloween, everyone! Two weeks ago, Microsoft officially released Internet Explorer 7 for all of us to use. And as soon as it was released, one of our veteran forum moderators, John Wilkinson, posted his handy Internet Explorer 7: Downloads and Notes thread so that our community members can get a better understanding of what to expect from this new browser. (Thanks for that, John!) Now that many of you have started to use this new version of IE, what do you like or dislike about? Is it better than you expected? Do you think it's more secure than previous versions? What new features do you think stand out from the rest? How does it compare to other browsers that you currently use? Please join us in this latest forum discussion, once again, created by forum moderator John.

Cheers!
Lee Koo

I liked it at first, but changed my mind
"Like everyone else who first installed IE 7, the format took some getting used to, but it grows on you. But now I am going back to IE 6 as I am getting tired of having to disable my cookie settings in my firewall each time I navigate..." (Read more)

Who cares?!
"I would guess that the only people who would think IE 7 was something special would be those who have never used any other browser extensively. There is nothing IE 7 can offer that Firefox, Opera, and even the new upstart..." (Read more)

What's your choice: optical viewfinder
   or LCD?

As larger and larger LCDs squeeze that little glass viewfinder off the back of your point-and-shoot, does it bug you? Or are you an arm's-length photographer, anyway?
BitTorrent: Fair use or despicable thievery?
Sure, downloading hundreds of movies you don't own is wrong. But what about downloading a TV show you missed? Fair use or stealing?
RFID-enabled credit card theft
A thief attempting to steal credit information from RFID-enabled, or contactless, credit cards could wander through crowded markets, picking up broadcasts from within wallets and purses. The response from the smart-card industry: shoot the messenger. Are you comfortable with RFID cards broadcasting your credit card information out into the ether?

Here's what CNET members have been saying about browsers.

Internet Explorer 7
CNET member Pikapichu says:
"IE 7 is a welcome update to IE 6. Notable additions include tabbed browsing and an integrated search bar. It has incorporated many of the features that made competing browsers great while retaining the IE-specific Web site standards that we love to hate." (read more)

Firefox 2
CNET member markbowen says:
"The developers of Firefox just seem to get it. We want a browser that doesn't hog memory, that is easy to install, and is easy to upgrade with extensions. It just gets better and more stable with each update." (read more)

Opera 9
CNET member OldLadyGeek says:
"Opera is loaded with features. Even after all these years, I learn about new ones. I use Firefox in Linux, and it's a fine browser, but it lacks features Opera has. Example: Fit To Width. This fabulous feature eliminates that superannoying horizontal scrolling that happens on some Web pages. Can't do without it!" (read more)
