Laptop: Sudden battery failure or something more?
Dear CNET members,
Happy Friday! For all the folks hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, you are in our thoughts.
Now on to this week's topic from member Gururaj, whose laptop battery life was gradually losing its capability to hold a charge, but then abruptly one day, out of the blue, it just stopped holding a charge completely. He's questioning this sudden failure, since he thought that batteries slowly die out, but not in this abrupt manner. So, is this issue as simple as the end of the battery's life or is it more to it than just that?
We received a bunch of great answers from our members regarding laptop battery failure. Most members reassured him that it's more than likely that the battery has simply reached its life expectancy and explained why it went out the way it did.
In addition to these great explanations, many people even included great tips and advice on how to troubleshoot your battery performance and how to maintain a healthy battery life from the start. So read up, and if you have any additional advice on how people can take better care of their laptop batteries, please share it. Thanks for you participation. Have a great weekend!

Laptop: Sudden battery failure or something more? |
| Dear friends, I have a HP Pavilion DV3 notebook running on Windows
7. It was purchased in December 2009. The battery has been slowly
weakening but before it would last at least an hour. About a
fortnight back, suddenly the battery has failed to power even for
a minute. If the power plug is pulled out, the computer switches
off, and does not even provide time to shut down properly. In my
experience, battery failure occurs gradually, and not so suddenly.
I don't mind replacing the battery. But, I do not know if there is
any other problem besides the battery in this notebook. Could
there be any other problem besides a weak battery? I would be
grateful for any input on this issue, before I proceed to change
the battery. In addition to this, if I do get a new battery for my
notebook, can you please advise me on some of the best practices
of keeping my new battery healthy? These batteries are expensive
and I'd like to get the best performance out of it and maximize
its life span. Thank you!

| Q: Does Windows 8 offer any improvements in usability or efficiency over 7? |
| This is a question for the community about the new Windows 8. I am a computer professional dating back to the olden days when you programmed them by positioning eight switches and then hitting "commit" to write a single byte. My native OS was Multics, the forerunner of Unix. I have obviously seen many changes over the years, but since the introduction of the consumer PC, I am not sure any have been quite the magnitude of change that Windows 8 represents, at least not as rapidly...
