CNET Community Hot Topics weekly newsletter
December 21, 2004
Dear CNET Members,
Ah, how I love to reminisce about the good old days when cell phones first became available. Remember back in the '80s when the dream cell phone weighed a whopping three pounds and had the dimension of a brick? Sounds more like a workout than a dream. Today, however, discussions pop up more about cellular carriers, especially with the recent mergers of Cingular and AT&T as well as Sprint and Nextel. While today's hot topic is about cell phone models, I wanted to kick it off with a question: Do you shop for a carrier before you even consider what phone to dream about? Discuss it here.

Happy Holidays!

Dream Cell Phones
In his column "Fully Equipped," Executive Editor David Carnoy asks: if money was no object, which cell phone would you choose? The winner by a landslide was the amazingly thin Motorola Razr V3, receiving over 50 percent of your total votes.

Thin is still in
For CNET member djbrook, one look at the Razr and it was love at first sight. Bluetooth, voice dialing, and the phone's extremely petite form factor are the main features that won him over.

Video to go
Sure it's a little pricey, but the Archos Pocket Video Recorder AV420 scores big on being cool. You praised the built-in TV scheduling software as the portable video recorder's killer app. Looking forward to the next version, many of you also noted that you'd like to see better PDA and digital camera functionality.

Better than the iPod?
Apparently, the iPod isn't the only MP3 player you'll consider this holiday season. Seventy-five percent of you gave the Creative Zen Micro a thumbs-up, noting the player's big battery life, spacious 5GB drive, and tiny form factor as key reasons to buy.

A view divided
Sometimes, technology can be a little too cutting-edge. That was your biggest complaint with the Dell Inspiron 9200. Despite the notebook's blistering performance and double-layer DVD burner, more than half of you noted that the 1,920x1,200 screen makes it difficult to read anything but the biggest fonts.
